At times, due to the paucity of funds, resources or time many homeowners decide to refinish their already existing kitchen cabinets. It is important to ensure that the kitchen cabinets are strong enough to last for another 5 or 10 years, to make the trouble of refinishing them worthwhile.
It is essential to make certain that
the floors of the existing cabinets are dry and free from rot. Cabinets under
the sink or near dishwashers need to be thoroughly checked, as they generally
show the most signs of wear. The floors, if rotten, need to be replaced. If the
shelves are also affected, then they need to be replaced as well.
The handles as well as the exteriors
of the cabinets need to be cleaned thoroughly. The cabinets should be wiped
till all the grime accumulated over the years. With the help of sandpaper, any
irregularities and gloss needs to be removed. The dust in the crevices needs to
be vacuumed or wiped away. This is important as they leave their telltale marks
on a refinished surface.
After removing the cabinet doors and
the hardware, a coat of paint or varnish should be applied. It is advisable to
paint the exterior of the doors from the bottom to the top. A second coat needs
to be applied, later. The interiors and sides of the cabinets and the face
frames should be painted accordingly. It is advisable for the cabinets to be
aired for 24 hours, before use.
In order to replace the doors, a
carpenter's expertise is essential. It should be ensured that the doors shut
properly. This provides a new look to the kitchen cabinet without having to go
in for a major or expensive makeover.
